It truly is disappointing and surprising that in 2017 we are once again – or should we say still? – discussing immigration detention and Identification and Expulsion Centers (CIEs – Centri di identificazione e espulsione).

Following Chief of Police Franco Gabrielli’s circular on extraordinary provisions related to “illegal immigration” – the first step of  the announced “wider strategy” of the new Minister of the Interior (“Ministro dell’Interno”), Marco Minniti, which promises a strict regime regarding irregular immigrants – the discussion on opening new CIEs has begun anew throughout the country.

Today we published a dossier that provides a summary of the failure of immigration detention and CIEs – which are inhuman, and useless.
